Devon 'Big Chill' camp

Postby Pinky » Sat Jun 27, 2015 7:59 pm

Hi Folks
This year the Devon Branches plan to combine our 'Big Chill' camping with a Military Experience weekend, from Friday the 10th through to Sunday 12th July. The military-themed living history weekend is being held at Cherry Hayes Farm EX14 9RD, on the outskirts of Smeatharpe a small village a few miles from Honiton.
The nearby Upottery Airfield, made famous by Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers, was one of two Devonshire air bases where on the night of 5th/6th June 1944 a fleet of C-47 Dakotas embarked for France carrying Easy Company of the 506th Airborne Division 'The Screaming Eagles' as part of the D-Day operations.

Over the weekend take a step back in time with; Military Vehicles and Equipment, Skirmish Re-Enactments, Heritage Museum, Arena Events, 40s Dance Saturday Night and Militaria Stalls. The special guest is Helen Patton. The site has toilet facilities and will have on site catering from Friday evening, there is a farm shop a short walk away while the villages of Churchinford and Upottery are within easy reach.
Camping is from Friday the 10th; no tickets required - pay on the gate - weekend admission £10:00 Show runs from 10am - 4pm with bar and hot food available Saturday and Sunday.
Day visitors welcome entry £5:00 p.p. Directions to the event will be posted on approaching routes - follow the signs showing, THE UPOTTERY WWII MILITARY EXPERIENCE
The weekend promises to be an interactive and imaginative show, all taking place in an area of historical importance on the Devon-Somerset border but still with our traditional 'laid back' feel for those who wish to relax in the rolling hills of the Devon countryside.
Hope to see you there... Pete

Actually the address is in the first post on the forum.
Obviously the last place any of us would look.

Hi all

The Big Chill camping (rally) and WWII Military Experience is all taking place in the same field, the camp ground is large and flat and I'm told we Guzzi's are sited to the far right hand side of the field, (bring a stand support) in front of the hedgerow, one of the Devon crew will be on hand from Friday midday to direct you in.
The event is taking place on the edge of the small village of Smeatharpe in the Blackdown Hills, not far from Dunkeswell.

There will be directional signs guiding you to the site from approaching routes, look out for 'UPOTTERY WWII MILITARY EXPERIENCE' signs.
Cherry Hayes Farm is next to the camping field but the entrance is a little way up the lane from the farm, again signs will be posted.

Hope this helps guys, look forward to seeing you there.

Ian thank you for the feed back, glad you enjoyed the weekend - hope to see you along next year when we plan to hold our Big Chill on the coast.
